How Do I Clean Out My Carpet Cleaner.?

My husband decided that instead of emptying my carpet cleaner out like I asked him to, that it really didn’t need it and it would be fine. 6 months later I go to clean the carpets and find it is filled with mold. I have a bissell proheat. I emptied and rinsed out everything as best as possible but it is still dirty and a little stained. I don’t want to clean my carpets with dirt and mold or bacteria whatever it was growing in there, any suggestions? I don’t think you can use bleach, but I am not sure because I can’t find the maual.
thank you

I have a bissell as well, I let my daughter who rented a house while away at college for two months, I got it back with everything under the sun growing inside it, NASTY and had a BAD smell, I was afraid to use bleach so I use white vinegar and soap, it took the bad smell away and it cleaned it out. Also, I used to clean my carpet once a month when my kids lived at home, I would always add a little bit of white vinegar in with my carpet soap, it kept my carpet deodorized and helped with the stains. When I had my 12 year old builders grade carpet replaced, they ask me how I kept it looking so good for so long !!

If the reservoir is made of plastic or any non metal product, just add some bleach and some dish soap. Let it sit a bit and with rubber gloves on, sponge the inside a bit with the “scratcher” side of the sponge. Rinse well and also remember to run just some hot water through the cleaner in case some of the mold has grown to the other areas. After that, beat your husband silly!

my dad has a carpet cleaning business (Best Carpet Care) and how he washes out his machines is he puts bleach in it and lets it soak, then wash it out.
